Seeing your baby for the first time is exciting. There is nothing quite like hearing her heartbeat and seeing her little shape on the ultrasound screen. You may be nervous, but here are a few tips to try and help make your appointment as easy as possible.
- Wear comfortable clothing.
Stretchy pants or leggings are the best option here. You will be asked to lower or remove your pants in order for the obstetrician to get the best view of your baby bump.
- Drink plenty of water.
Of course this will mean you’ll have to pee, but you should be used to that by now. Getting a clear picture of your baby is easiest when your bladder is full though. So make sure to drink at least 24 ounces of water within an hour of your appointment.
- Ask if you can have a picture.
Most of the time, a high resolution ultrasound will be able to print out a picture for you. But if they are currently unable to do that, it may be possible to download the images onto a thumb drive or CD-ROM. Talk to your obstetrician beforehand so you know what to expect. You already know everyone is going to want to see your baby.
- Be patient.
Your baby might be a little camera shy, or she could be sleeping. In the event that she isn’t in the most ideal position to get a good look at her, you can help by gently pressing on your stomach. Don’t be aggressive about it though. She’s growing in there and that takes a lot of energy.
Try singing to her, and sitting very still before your appointment. Your obstetrician might be able to help encourage her to face the right way too.
